BICENTENNIAL
in the ST. CROIX VALLEY
“In celebration of Calais”
by Tom Brennan
July 31 through August 31 2009
CALAIS FREE LIBRARY
Are you going to the free art exhibit at the library? Every year during International Festival, the Calais Free Library has been hosting an art exhibit about our area. Created by Tom Brennan, the shows focus on the St. Croix Valley and our unique international friendship between the border communities of Calais, Maine, U.S.A. and St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada. This year the theme of the exhibit is the Calais Bicentennial.
Plans call for this year’s show in August to feature ten large original paintings about life in Calais throughout the year. The distinctive four seasons we experience will be highlighted. Most visitors are here in the beautiful summer months so this will give them an opportunity to view aspects of life in the St. Croix Valley the rest of the year. From the Memorial Day parade, to the bi-weekly Music on the Green performances, and from the daily fun at our swimming pool, International Festival Parade and Halloween at the library to the annual home basketball game with Woodland, this art exhibit will examine the cultural and social life of Calais Maine for the first time in a uniquely artistic manner. Mark 6:00 PM on your calendar for the July 31 welcoming Reception and plan to arrive early. This event has seen large turnouts in recent years.
Earlier art exhibits by Tom Brennan included INCREDIBLE ILLUSTRATIONS twenty-one portraits & sketches of local people); WINTERSCAPES (thirty-four landscapes and Maine vocations); MUSIC of the ST CROIX VALLEY(thirty-six pieces honoring local musicians 1912-1978); WORSHIP in the ST. CROIX VALLEY (fifty-two pastels of area churches plus two paintings. In addition to these shows, Tom has a permanent exhibit of eleven 16×20 portraits of MUSICAL GENIUSES on display at the Calais High School. Hope to see you at in August at our library for the Bicentennial show!
