Bi-Centennial News

July 28th, 2009

The Sylvina Beal is scheduled to arrive around 8am on Friday. It will make the first time in fifty years that a schooner has sailed up the St. Croix River to Calais, and 150 years since a ship arrived bearing passengers. The schooner will be docked behind the Calais Free Library all day Friday for viewing and will set sail for a return voyage downriver to her home port at Eastport just before sunset.

The new Veteran’s Memorial at Memorial Park will be dedicated as part of the ceremonies on Friday. Bricks engraved with the names of friends and loved ones who have served our country can be purchased. Contact Calais City Hall for details.

Don’t wash your cars! We need all the sunshine we can find this week to celebrate the 200th birthday of the City of Calais.

Where, What, When?

July 27th, 2009

We are looking to add some new sections to the website to answer some of these questions for people visiting the Calais Area, and the more information people in the community send us the better.

When? – We Feel we are doing and have gotten alot of great feed back that the website is delivering information on events and things going on, keep sending us the information and we will keep on posting it.

Where? – Now we want to address where to stay, where to eat for both local people and visitors alike. So if we can have people submit information to answer these questions we will be able to deliver it. We have already added a Where to Stay section but we know there is more and we need people to help us gather information.

What? What things are there to do, such as hiking/walking paths, parks, playgrounds, swimming, 4 wheeling and more.We are in the process of gatherin this information to add a things to do section so if you know of something that is alot of fun send it through so that we can add this as well.

It’s great to hear feedback and to get more information online and readily available for everyone to access easily.

Thanks

Donald Soctomah Reading & Booksigning

July 13th, 2009

Donald Soctomah Reading & Booksigning of “Remember Me: Tomah Joseph’s Gift to Franklin Roosevelt” is July 20th at Calais Bookshop

Passamaquoddy historian, Donald Soctomah, will read and sign his new children’s book, “Remember Me: Tomah Joseph’s Gift to Franklin Roosevelt” on Monday, July 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Calais Bookshop, 405 Main St. Beautifully illustrated by Maine artist, Mary Beth Owens, and co-authored with Jean Flahive, the book tells the story of the special bond between a young Franklin D. Roosevelt and Tomah Joseph, the Passamaquoddy elder and former chief who made his living as a guide, birchbark canoe builder, and basketmaker.

Each summer Tomah Joseph would canoe from Peter Dana Point to Campobello where Franklin Roosevelt would stay at his family’s summer home. A master craftsman, Tomah Joseph’s work was later documented by the Museum of Anthropology at Brown University, in a book entitled History on Birchbark. The canoe he built for FDR can still be seen at Campobello as a symbol of their friendship. “Remember Me: Tomah Joseph’s Gift to Franklin Roosevelt” gives an insight into Passamaquoddy culture and tradition. For more information regarding this event, call Calais Bookshop, 454-0111.
